THE COLLEGE OF MANAGEMENT IS AWARDING HONORARY DOCTORAL DEGREES TO MR CHAO HSI-CHENG AND Ms CHAO HSIAO-LAN

    The College of Management is very honored to confer honorary doctoral degrees to 

    Mr CHAO, Hsi-Cheng and Ms CHAO, Hsiao-Lan. Mr Chao is an alumni of the 

    Department of Navigation of the National Chiao Tung University. After his 

    outstanding achievements, he obtained the grade of Marine Captain and left for the 

    United States in 1958 for further studies. He first went to New York, at Columbia 

    University working part-time to get through university. From there, he went to St 

    John’s University to earn his Ph.D in Business in 1979. After his graduation, Mr Chao 

    founded Foremost Group, making great achievements. Ms Chao graduated from 

    Harvard Business School and served as a former US Secretary of Labor. She and her 

    husband are currently considered as the most influential couple in the US political 

    arena. When father and daughter attend a celebration or ceremony, the audience can 

    feel their glamour and realize the importance of family education. Mr CHAO, Hsi-

    Cheng will promote the Taiwan-established National Chiao Tung University at 

    Harvard University, to provide the CHAO-CHU Mu-Lan Scholarships for Asian 

    students, to foster family education and to remind children the importance of not 

    forgetting their origins. Mr Chao is a successful entrepreneur and benevolent 

    educator. Some people say that Taiwanese hate rich people but criticism is greed and 

    Mr Chao and his daughter are outstanding models for all NCTU students. Awarding 

    honorary degrees to both father and daughter is a great honor and privilege for the 

    College of Management.
