Upon the appeals of the alumni and the Taiwanese society, the Department of Management Science was established in 1971 to cultivate management talents. After graduation, the students are employed by the public, private, and academic organizations at home and abroad. With their outstanding reasoning, execution and management abilities that are the core traits developed by the school, they inject new blood into traditional management trainings.

The vitality of a department is evaluated by its ability to cultivate new knowledge, which is achieved by the academic research. Therefore, aside from developing the senior management talents needed by the country in economic rehabilitation and development through teaching activities, the department also undertakes the mission of providing new knowledge, and leads the academy through research. Since the Department of Management Science belongs to a newly emerging inter-disciplinary integrated science, the research fields are wider and more challenging.

Research Fields

The key courses of the department are designed by integrating numerical method, information system and various professional management sciences. The department lays importance on the integration of the information technology and management decision-making theory, with the mission of cultivating the qualified management talents and further improving the domestic research level in management science. To respond to the national development “information”, “internationalization” and “high-tech” trends in the future, the department puts the development focus on the (1) numerical method, (2) information management, (3) finance, (4) marketing management, (5) and organization and behavior, so as to encourage the students to be technology-oriented and possess management skills.

In order to respond to economic development and encourage modern transportation construction in Taiwan, the school established the Department of Marine Transportation and Department of Shipping Technology (composed of navigation and marine engineering) in 1973 and plans to set up the Department of Transportation Management next year to cultivate engineering and management talents in sea, land, air and city transportation. In 1976, the Institute of Transportation Engineering was founded to cultivate senior professional talents in sea, land, air and city transportation project and management, so as to fulfill the demands for development and construction of Taiwan’s economy. However, considering that transportation covers vast academic fields, which cannot be covered by the word “engineering”, it was approved to be renamed as the Institute of Traffic and Transportation in 1979 to be more in sync with reality. In 1980, it adjusted and merged the Department of Marine Transportation and the Department of Transportation Management to establish the Department of Transportation Engineering and Management. Since 1987, it has been offering PhD programs. In 2001, in order to respond to the industry globalization and development tendency of the supply chain and demand train, it further added a special transportation and logistics class to meet the demands of this industry and cultivate senior talents in the transportation and logistics fields.

To be in line with the trends and meet the development of transportation technology, this department, as approved by the Ministry of Education, changed its name to the Department of Transportation Technology and Management in 2001, which offers Bachelor’s, Masters and PhD programs. The previous Department of Transportation Technology and Management and Institute of Traffic and Transportation emerged as the Department of Transportation and Logistics Management, which has a Bachelor’s, Masters and PhD program in Traffic and Transportation, Masters and PhD Program in Logistics Management as well as on-the-job Master’s program in Traffic and Transportation. The department devotes itself to the research and development of fields related to transportation and logistics management to supplement research and teaching with each other, cultivate students’ ability in exploring and solving problems as well as independent thinking and innovation. The teachers and students actively participate in the academic and practical research of related traffic and transportation construction and planning, operations management and transportation technology of Taiwan, which have resulted in fruitful achievements. Through years of endeavor and support from all sides, the Department of Transportation Management has grown its teacher resource, teaching equipment and course planning and continued to develop towards diversification and prominence. In the future, we will adhere to the original intention and insist on an active entrepreneurial attitude, so as to cultivate more talents in transportation technology and logistics management in Taiwan for the benefit of society.

This department ranks first among the Department of Traffic Transportation and Logistics Management of the various colleges and universities in Taiwan. There are altogether 20 full- time teachers, with the research fields including: transportation policy and planning, traffic control, intelligent transportation system, logistics strategy management, supply chain management, global planning and management, transportation business and management, and transportation engineering and safety. The diversified teaching methods give flexibility for students in terms of course planning, taking up advanced studies, practical training, etc. After their professional training in school, they are widely welcomed and valued by both government departments and private enterprises whether for continuing education or as a part of the workforce.

The Internet Era allows information technology to be widely applied in financial management, from family financial planning to national financial policies. It has become a global trend to apply information technology on financial management. In keeping up with this trend, the College of Management, NCTU established the Department of Information and Financial Management in 2004, with two educational goals: One is to develop professional financial talents with basic IT competence, and the other is to develop information management talents with basic financial knowledge.

Research Fields

By establishing the Department of Information and Financial Management, NCTU hopes to integrate its strength in the field of information into the financial field, so as to cultivate the new generation of financial talents. The department, from the perspective of supporting financial research with practical teaching and information, plans to integrate financial management and information. Moreover, it makes use of various information and knowledge resources to propose updated information and innovation principles. Based on the outstanding achievement in information technology education and research by NCTU, information technology is applied to the financial or other related fields, and even provides the curriculum design of information-based financial investment decision-making to strengthen the students’ practical application experience. It is also expected to serve as the pioneer of the domestic information-supported financial management.

Graduate Program in Information Management

NCTU is the national key university of information education. The development track could be found in each department in terms of the hardware, software, theory or application related to information technology. Early in 1981 or so, the information management field was incorporated in the Departments of Information Engineering, Information Technology, Management Science, and Industrial Engineering. NCTU sensed that Information Management had developed into an important field, so it established the Institute under the College of Management in 1987.

In 1989, it was approved to recruit graduate students, becoming the first Institute of Information Management established in Taiwan. In 1993, it opened the Doctoral Program and recruited candidates for the said program in 1994. The Credit-Based Class was established in 1997, aiming to cultivate talents for the business circle. The In-Service Graduate School was opened in 1999, providing a further-study channel for the in-service staff, and stepping towards the industrial-academic cooperation. In 2008, under the department integration policy of the school, it integrated with the Department of Information and Financial Management, as well as the Institute of Finance, so as to combine  the professional fields of information and finance and create a well-rounded institute.

Research Fields

The development direction of the information management field mainly features the innovative combination of IT and the business field, which improves the business efficiency with IT and creates the IT economic value. It focuses on applying IT onto the effective management and application of the information and knowledge in each field, making it more efficient.. The development direction of the Institute includes Financial Information and IT Finance, E-commerce and Business Intelligence, Knowledge Management and Information Strategy, Information Network and Business System, and Operation Management and Optimization.
